6th Annual Grand Pacific Open Event Report:

Ho hum, another year, another record attendance at the Grand Pacific Open to go with this year's record guaranteed prize fund of $5000. This year's attendance of 120 flew by last year's record of 104 with players from (give or take) five different countries, seven different states, and four different provinces. An added attraction was the participation of GM Hikaru Nakamura, 6th ranked in the world. It is not common for a weekend tournament such as the GPO to have such a high profile name - this was a rare opportunity for BC players to see one of the best in the world in person in action.

As always, there were a number of side events starting with the BC Chess Challenge with 185 players and a four round Active for the adults. The traditional midnight blitz tournament was held on Saturday and a bughouse event closed out the tournament.

The location, was the superb Hotel Grand Pacific situated in downtown Victoria on the waterfront, next to the BC legislature. Next year's event is already booked for Easter 2013, March 29-April 1. Midnight Blitz: Midnight Blitz was a popular event again this year with 30 players taking part in a 5 double round tournament that finished just after midnight. Janak Awatramani was first with a score of 8.5/10. Jill Ding was first with 6.5/10 in the U1500 class. Alice Xiao and Ray Wu shared 1st in the U1800 class with a score of 6.0/10 Full Results

GPO Bughouse: The 2012 Grand Pacific Bughouse was a hotly contested event. An array of crazy teams battled it out in a 5 round swiss with 3 minutes on the clock. In the end the Old Married Couple (Noam and Ben) took first with a score of 4/5 after a playoff with Magical Starfish (Jeremy and Janak). Laser Team (Joshua and Neil) took 1st in the U12 class. To no one's surpirse, GM Hikaru Nakamura took home first place with last year's champion, WGM Nino Maisuradze finishing in clear second.
